The Embankment Galleries at Somerset House
24/04/2008
On the 24th April 2008, Somerset House will launch the Embankment Galleries with a bold, imaginative and distinctive programme of exhibitions.
The new exhibition space opens with Skin+Bones: Parallel Practices in Fashion and Architecture. Traditionally, fashion and architecture have remained quite distinct. In recent years, however, the two disciplines have become closer than ever before.
Taking the early 1980s as its starting point, Skin+Bones examines the many visual and conceptual ideas that unite the two disciplines.
The exhibition features 50 of the world's leading fashion design and architects, including Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Comme des garcons, Yohji Yamamoto, Future Systems, Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid. After huge success in Los Angeles and Tokyo, the exhibition opens in London with specially selected new pieces including work by Boudicca, Thomas Heatherwick, Martin Margiela, and Hussein Chalayan.
A new entertaining space, Embankment East, will also open as part of the Embankment Galleries this month, offering a reception capacity of 300, or dinner for 120. Guests may enjoy highlight tours during public opening hours or private views of the exhibition, subject to availability, alongside hire of Embankment East.
Further entertaining opportunities are offered by Somerset House's additional six venues, from the magnificent Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court to the elegant Seamen's Hall, the world-class Courtauld Gallery to the intimate Navy Board Rooms, and compact Lecture Theatre to the contemporary Portico Rooms.
As one of London's leading centres for culture and the arts, Somerset House provides an inimitable venue for corporate and private entertaining. Whatever the event, for 8 or 1000 guests, only Somerset House can offer a choice of spectacular venues within one Grade I listed building in the heart of London's West End.
Our Corporate Events team recognise the importance of your event in its entirety and coordinate all the elements essential for a superlative event - from styling, lighting and audio visual requirements to catering, entertainment, floral design and marquees - delivered by accredited event suppliers with impeccable credentials.
