The Royal Institution is famous for its scientific heritage and research, being home to 14 Nobel prize winners and the discovery of 10 chemical elements. Our most famous scientist, Michael Faraday, whose theory of electromagnetism drives much of our modern world, set up the Christmas Lectures for children which are televised each year.

The completion of a recent redevelopment project has transformed our Mayfair building into an exciting and inspiring venue, providing a unique mix of historic and modern spaces. The famous Faraday Theatre has been fitted out with new seating and audiovisuals, making it ideal for conferences, award shows, and screenings, while our elegant Georgian rooms provide the perfect backdrop for a meeting, dinner or drinks party. Our stunning glass atrium is a new addition to our event spaces and we now also have a wedding licence for civil ceremonies and partnerships.

Delegates and guests are welcome to visit our free museum and relax in Time & Space, the new café, bar and restaurant run by our in-house caterers Digby Trout.

  • The RI was founded on Albemarle Street in 1799 to promote science ‘for the common purposes of life’.
  • The science lectures at the RI were so popular that Albemarle Street became London’s first one way street to ease congestion.
  • The Faraday Theatre has hosted many renowned speakers including Michael Faraday, HG Wells, David Attenborough and Richard Dawkins
